Ears & Rears

At Carberry Vet Clinic, we know that healthy ears and anal glands are essential for your pet’s comfort and wellbeing.

Problems in these areas can be uncomfortable or even painful, but with careful observation and routine care, many issues can be prevented or managed effectively.

Ear Health in Cats & Dogs

Ear infections are a common concern for both dogs and cats. Signs that your pet may have an ear problem include:

  • Scratching or pawing at the ears

  • Head shaking or tilting

  • Redness, swelling, or odor in the ear canal

  • Discharge or crusty buildup

Chronic ear infections, especially when accompanied by skin infections, can sometimes indicate the sudden development of allergies. Our team can work with you to identify potential triggers and guide you toward dietary adjustments or special recipes to help give your pet relief.

If you notice any of these signs, it’s important to have your pet examined promptly. Left untreated, ear infections can cause pain, hearing loss, and chronic inflammation.

Anal Gland Health

Scooting, licking, or dragging the rear along the floor can indicate that your pet’s anal glands need attention. These small glands can become full or impacted, causing discomfort.

Some pets need their anal glands expressed more frequently than others due to individual anatomy or the way their glands are naturally designed. Every pet is unique, just like us!

Other contributing factors include:

  • Dietary fiber — Pets with low-bulk stools may not naturally express their glands during normal bowel movements.

  • Avoid grain-free diets — Lack of fiber in some diets can make anal gland expression more difficult.

  • Supplements — Certain supplements can be added to your pet’s diet to help support gland health. We can discuss whether this is appropriate for your pet during their appointment.

Regular veterinary checks can help determine the right schedule for your pet and ensure their glands stay healthy and comfortable.

At Carberry Vet Clinic, we work with pet parents to:

  • Identify early signs of ear infections and treat them promptly

  • Assess anal gland health and express glands when necessary

  • Recognize when chronic ear or skin infections may signal allergies

  • Recommend dietary adjustments or supplements to support gland and skin health

  • Provide education on at-home care and monitoring

Healthy ears, a happy rear, and comfortable skin contribute to a comfortable, active, and joyful life for your pet, and we’re here to help every step of the way.
